On/Off: South Korea BBC experiement

Posted by Johnny Romano On January - 15 - 2011

5 FEBRUARY 2010 – EXPERIMENT ENDS

After a week of web-less living, our two volunteer families are back online.

Another visit from Korea Telecom’s Mr Song is all it took, and with the return of the internet modems to their rightful places, the homes were rewired to the digital super-highway.

Sighs of relief all round.

Both families spoke of a major sense of inconvenience trying to navigate the complexity of modern-day Korea without it.

After just seven days, no surprise, of course, that their world didn’t grind to a halt.

But our little experiment has shown how the internet has become an integral part of so many aspects of daily life here; leisure, education, transport, banking, shopping and socialising.

The Yang family have rediscovered reading from books – but still want their computers back

For the Kims and the Yangs, like many other South Korean families, it takes up a large proportion of their waking hours.

Mr Kim hopes that the experience will help his children to “become more wise” in the amount of time they spend at the computer keyboard.

Mr Yang says that being cut off has allowed him to “rediscover lost time.”

Would any of them recommend the experience to their friends?

“Definitely,” Kim Sung-jun, Mr Kim’s eldest son, replies.

“They need to know how suffocating it can feel living without it.”

Mr Yang’s wife, Youm Jung-a, believes that although now happily reconnected she will change the way she uses the internet in the future.

“After finishing my morning chores I spend between two and three hours online,” she tells me.

“That’s time spent alone. But during this past week I’ve even had the time to drink tea with neighbours, so I’m going to regulate time spent online from now on.”

So both families are in agreement.

For them, the experiment has highlighted how vital a tool the internet is, but also how it has come to replace other aspects of family life.

Would they give it up again?

“It would be the same as asking if you could cut off my electricity for a week,” Cho Hye-sook laughs.

“Lose the internet for another seven days? It’s a real no-thank-you I’m afraid. I don’t want to go through this again.”

Future Djs use touch Screen emulators

Posted by Johnny Romano On January - 11 - 2011

Well does not look bad, it is Token Emulator and full touch DJ software and tactile control surface that allow the cool features the following video, I think the Touch is one of the technologies that we will hear more in the coming years, love that will gradually integrating the different systems used usually screens, laptops, desktops, tablets, mobile devices, etc.
The system consists of:

Screen: The screen in the video is called Token, developed by yöyen munchausen, the interesting thing about this screen is that by being transparent, the public can see what makes the DJ.

Software: Emulator is the name of the software, and was developed by Paul Martin, is a system developed for Windows 7 Multitouch.

töken experience from yöyen munchausen on Vimeo.

töken drunken :P from yöyen munchausen on Vimeo.

töken concept from yöyen munchausen on Vimeo.

To date, touch screens Generally Have Been Bigger Than A little book – Often more than not the size of … well an iPhone screen. This of course DJ Makes the spacious traditional metaphor a tad cramped to say the least, and frankly really crap to watch if you’re a punter. But this video Demonstrates the next level of controller technology, and the overcomer Also iPad hunched over the non-performance. My iPad just Became a placemat.

This is a 2 part thing:

1. The big screen is Something Called Token, Developed by yöyen munchausen vimeo user. It Appears to Be a large multitouch screen interface Aimed at performance. The beauty of it is That You Can See Both Sides, Thus the viewer can see Exactly what the DJ is doing.

2. The software is Called Emulator and created by Paul Martin. It’s a multi-touch Windows 7 only program, and design to work with 1280 × 800 touch screens. It’s Actually MIDI control software, and in this first release works with Traktor in internal mode, with compatibility with Others coming.

I Doubt this setup is cheap of course (Though Emulator is $ 75), pero really does look amazing in use. This works on a couple of Levels for me – firstly, usability over the current touch screens is Obvious. Even on an iPad, the screen is still too small to squeeze a full DJ Comfortably app into. Could you make it look like Traktor, But you’ll soon hit the wall of usability When Trying to control loops and cues from a single tiny window with Both Hands in there.

But for me, ITS much more about the performance you give. I Doubt That Anyone Would disagree as far as using a controller with DJ software goes, this is light years ahead of Visually anything right now. Seeing Exactly what the DJ is doing (albeit in reverse) and the associated light show too has a real wow factor. It’s like Minority Report meets Traktor.

I do hope this Makes it to a trade show soon. I’d love to Have a dabble on this. Good work guys!

US Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 15 - 2010

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a markup Nov. 18 on S. 3804, Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act.

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US. Which is really contradicting the fredom of speech.

Remember to contact your representatives to let them know your opinion on the proposed bill. To find out who are the senators on your state and their contact information, you can visit the U.S. Senate website, by clicking here

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition
DemandProgress.org – Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist!

Also for US citizens, you can email your Senator from the following link and tell him or her your concerns about this bill
Tell Your Senator: No Website Blacklists, No Internet Censorship!

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.
Stop the Internet Blacklist
======

Update, from EFF’s website: the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed the scheduled markup of the Internet censorship bill — a fantastic outcome, given that the entertainment industry and their allies in Congress had hoped this bill would be quickly approved before the Senators went home for the October recess. Massive thanks to all who used the EFF Action Center to write to your Senators to oppose this bill.

Oregon Trail (pc game)

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

As a covered wagon party of pioneers, you head out west from Independence, MI to the Willamette River and valley in Oregon. You first must stock up on provisions, and then, while traveling, make decisions such as when to rest, how much food to eat, etc. The Oregon Trail incorporates strategy and planning ahead along with discovery and adventure as well as action (hunting and floating down the Dalles river).

*This is the Windows version, tested & works on XP Pro SP3, not sure about Vista.

Pidgin vs Trillian, Miranda or Digsby: “Which IM app is the best?

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

bestimappLets be honest here: who does not instant message (IM) nowadays? The problem is the whole world can’t agree on which IM service to use. AIM? MSN? Yahoo? Gmail? [Insert IM service here]? To address this we-can’t-make-up-our-minds issue, programs where created where you could use multiple IM services in one program instead of having to download the client for each service individually. If you ask in public “What IM application should I use?” a turf war will be started between the Pidgin, Trillian, Miranda and Digsby fans. All this fighting prevents the important question from being answered: “Which one is the best?”. Well I am here to try to help you solve that problem.

Each of the four mentioned above have their advantages and disadvantages:

Pidgin

Pros

  • Universally supported – works on more then just Windows.
  • You don’t need to create a server side account to use.
  • Has intensive plugin support.
  • Supports many IM services out of the box.
  • Fairly lightweight.

Cons

  • When it comes to Windows, it lacks basic functionality without plugins.
  • File transfers do not work a lot of the time.
  • Does not have an eye candy interface.

Trillian

Pros

  • Works out of the box.
  • A good balance between computer resource use and aesthetically pleasing interface.
  • You do not need a server side account to use.
  • Good plugin support.

Cons

  • Free version has limited support when it comes to IM services.
  • File transfers usually never work if other person does have not Trillian.
  • Only for Windows (have a Mac version in the works).

Miranda

Pros

  • Very lightweight.
  • Extensive plugin and skinning support.
  • Fully customizable.
  • Supports many IM services out of the box.
  • You don’t need to create a server side account to use.

Cons

  • Takes a lot of customization/setting up to get it to be how you want it.

Digsby

Pros

  • Beautiful interface.
  • Supports many IM services out of the box.
  • Has intensive support for emails and social networks.
  • Fully featured out of the box – no need for plugins.
  • File transfers usually work even if the other person does not have Digsby.
  • Developers are constantly releasing patches and updates.

Cons

  • Has its fair share of problems every now and then with email notifications.
  • Uses slightly more computer resources then the alternatives.
  • Only on Windows (a Mac and Linux version are in the works).
  • Little to no plugin support.

I have used all four mentioned about so again, each of the four have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are looking for an IM application that is very light on computer resources & stable, go with Miranda or Pidgin.

If you want my personal opinion, I say while all of the IM apps are good, PIDGIN IS THE BEST IM application that surpasses all the rest. It’s very easy to setup and works out of the box – no need to install plugins or anything. Also, besides allowing you to connect to AIM, Windows Live Messenger (MSN), Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, Facebook Chat, ICQ, and Jabber IM services, you also have the ability to monitor multiple emails from different email services (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL/AIM Mail) or even a custom email service (via IMAP or POP) and social networking (Facebook, MySpace) accounts. It has a very aesthetically pleasing interface and file transfers usually work no matter what IM application the other person you are talking to is using.
However if you ever travel alot and away from your own computer alot. Make sure you check out www.meebo.com for an Im solution that doesnt require you to download anything. All services are hosted right on the web. Plus they have easy to set up chat rooms that u could link to your organization’s website. :) .

Here are download links for all four:

Pidgin

Trillian

Miranda

Digsby

Which application (if any) do you use? Post below so we can segregate readers by their choice (or lack of choice) of IM applications and start our own sectarian violence.

Goodbye to torrent files! “DHT is the future, says Pirate Bay.

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

“DHT is the future, says Pirate Bay.

It seems to be the end of an era for the PirateBay. After having its recognizable logo pirated from itself, the PirateBay winds down a little bit further by officially shutting down its Bittorrent tracker.

As detailed in the PirateBay blog today, the sharing site is now going with Distributed Hash Table (DHT) services. The PirateBay explains to us what it believes to be the sharing future:

The development of DHT has reached a stage where a tracker is no longer needed to use a torrent. DHT (combined with PEX) is highly effective in finding peers without the need for a centralized service. If you run uTorrent you might have noticed in the tracker tab of your torrents that the [Peer Exchange] (PEX) row is often reporting a lot more peers than the trackers you might have for that torrent. These peers all came to you without the use of a central tracker service! This is what we consider to be the future. Faster and more stability for the users because there is no central point to rely upon.

Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well.

By moving to a more decentralized system of handling tracking (DHT+PEX) and distributions of torrent files (Magnet Links), BitTorrent will become less vulnerable to downtime and outages:

* With decentralized peer acquisition, there is no central tracker that can be down.
* With decentralized fetching of metadata (torrents) we don’t need to rely on a single server that stores and distributes torrent files.”

saw this on another site so i figured id post it

Clear wire usb modem

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

So I recently got clearwire as a secondary ISP to test out for mobile internet use.

CLEAR 4G WiMAX is next generation mobile internet from Clearwire that works as fast around town as it does at home*. Because CLEAR covers a wide area you don’t have to find a hotspot—the hotspot goes with you, anywhere CLEAR has coverage.

CLEAR mobile internet is 4 times faster than 3G*. So do the same things on the go, at speeds as fast as at home:

  1. Watch live sports on a train
  2. Email a huge presentation from the park
  3. Let your kids play online games while you get your hair cut

Basically what this means is that I can access the internet with the same mobile broadband technology that your mobile phone is based off of. The benefit of this is that I can create a network of computers where ever there is electricity (with the home modem). Then the USB modem will provide an internet connection for your laptop or desktop computer.

Conclusion:

These devices are absolutely great if you live away from high rise buildings and in-line of site of antenna towers. If you are using this in the suburbs, you will most likely love it! However using this in the inner city of Chicago like me, its close to impossible. In large metro city’s like Chicago, you are more likely to find good connection speeds from wifi hotspots.

The one technical benefit from Clear is that they give you a static IP address with your service. This is great for internet broadcasting, connecting to server’s or even using for remote screen sharing. Which is something I use to provide technical support for my clients @ Bizoost.

Play Nintendo on your PC

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

I’m not a big video game fan these days, but I do love to reminisce with the games i grew up on.

Here’s an awesome way to play all the nintendo NES games on your pc.

Just download and open the “emulator” (NESTICLE.EXE) then use that to open the ROM (games).

All the game could be found here.

Runs all NES Roms — compatible w/ all versions of windows, not sure about vista though.
