Music industry trends

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 26 - 2010

People are tired of being force fed stale over played FM radio programing.   Play list’s based on media conglomerate advertising sales figures instead of audience reaction. Ring-tone programing and music that sounds like long commercials for liqueur Company’s and drug affiliates.

Instead, ClubCast.Tv and MixTapeRadio.Fm gives our audience the same cutting edge (Dj created) programing that packs the night clubs week after week. With an loyal audience yearning to get lost in the music and the momemt.

With the help of todays social networks, finding  new music these days has become a word of mouth business. The day’s of hearing your favorite artist airing a unreleased track on FM radio are rapidly fading.  Leaked on a blog or heard on internet radio is a better bet these days!  It’s more widely used  by enthusiast giving them the constant variety Fm radio is lacking. New text

Todays rising unemployment rates comes greater creativity.  Don’t forget that Punk, House, hiphop, indie were born in the troubled times and the recession in the end of the 70s / early 80s.  Right now there’s a lot of musician’s breaking away from the norm,  giving music lovers a new approach.  Which has starting to flourish in 2010 with hiphop artist like B.O.B., J.Cole, Wale, Tabi Bonney, Alchemist, Brother Ali, Murs. Artist that use music to inspire with content worth sharing.
In 2011 we can expect to see much more original homemade music across the genre list.  With instruments from the 80′s like the beloved synthesizer and keyboard (hopefully the ‘keytar’). Along with artist sampling and blending genre’s and people together. Quickly becoming viral sensations via social media networks. Without the funds big record labels provide for wide spread exposure.

Keep in mind that 50% of the Grammies in 2009 went to independent artist and 36% the year before. Being independent isn’t a fad, it’s a great way of doing business because of its low overhead and creative content. Marketing your band yourself is part of being independent.  However having a product that sell’s itself is what makes the music industry the hardest to conquer.

Music simply travels farther & faster around the world than any one “product”.  Giving entrepreneurs, artists and  fans the ability to compete against major labels with little or no overhead for advertising, marketing and production. Opening the door for entrepreneur’s with a love for music entertainment.

One of the best ways to find new music is through following Dj’s.  Most popular Dj’s belong to a number of private record pools.  Using the nightclubs for “testing grounds” before most radio stations add it to the rotation.   Dj’s deliver music to consumers based on cold, hard visual dance floor data. Not quirky surveys, research or what music labels invest to then have repeatedly rotated through out the day. Until you’re singing the chorus and buying the CD because you cant get it outta your head.

ClubCast.TV & MixTapeRadio.Fm Dj’s are the music industry’s most accurate music trend setters. Developing the hottest programing that our fans cant get enough of.  In turn giving more freedom  and instant accessibility to our fans.

At any given time the real “pulse” of the music can be taken from a new up and coming media company called AZB (currently seeking investors – contact).

RiP! A Remix Manifesto

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 23 - 2010

RiP!: A Remix Manifesto is a 2008 open source documentary film about “the changing concept of copyright” directed by Brett Gaylor.
Created over a period of six years, the documentary film features the collaborative remix work of hundreds of people who have contributed to the Open Source Cinema website, helping to create the “world’s first open source documentary” as Gaylor put it. The project’s working title was Basement Tapes,(referring to the album of the same name) but it was renamed RiP!: A Remix Manifesto prior to theatrical release. Gaylor encourages more people to create their own remixes from this movie, using media available from the Open Source Cinema website, or other websites like YouTube, Flickr, Hulu, or MySpace.

“1 Culture always builds on the past

2. The past always tries to control the future

3. our future is becoming less free

4. To build free societies you must limit the control of the past

Before the music dies

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 23 - 2010

Before the Music Dies (B4MD) is a 2006 documentary film that criticizes the American music industry and the increasing commercialization of the art of music over the past thirty years. The film features interviews and performances from such musicians and groups as Doyle Bramhall II, Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt [1] and My Morning Jacket. It was directed by Andrew Shapter, produced by Joel Rasmussen, and co-written by Shapter and Rasmussen. The film premiered on March 12, 2006 at the South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas.

The film looks at the evolution of American popular music and discusses the marketing of contemporary pop stars. “The reality is that superficiality is in,” says Marsalis. “And depth and quality is kind of out.”

Quantitative Easing Explained

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 20 - 2010

Quantitative easing (QE) is a monetary policy used by some central banks to increase the supply of money by increasing the excess reserves of the banking system, generally through buying of the central government’s own bonds to stabilize or raise their prices and thereby lower long-term interest rates. This policy is usually invoked when the normal methods to control the money supply have failed, i.e the bank interest rate, discount rate and/or interbank interest rate are either at, or close to, zero.
How

1. The national bank declares an extremely low rate of interest, for example 0.5%.
2. The national bank credits its own bank account with money created from ‘thin air’, probably just by adding to a number on its computer.
3. The newly created money is then used for buying government bonds from financial firms such as banks, insurance companies and pension funds.

US Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 15 - 2010

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a markup Nov. 18 on S. 3804, Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act.

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US. Which is really contradicting the fredom of speech.

Remember to contact your representatives to let them know your opinion on the proposed bill. To find out who are the senators on your state and their contact information, you can visit the U.S. Senate website, by clicking here

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition
DemandProgress.org – Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist!

Also for US citizens, you can email your Senator from the following link and tell him or her your concerns about this bill
Tell Your Senator: No Website Blacklists, No Internet Censorship!

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.
Stop the Internet Blacklist
======

Update, from EFF’s website: the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed the scheduled markup of the Internet censorship bill — a fantastic outcome, given that the entertainment industry and their allies in Congress had hoped this bill would be quickly approved before the Senators went home for the October recess. Massive thanks to all who used the EFF Action Center to write to your Senators to oppose this bill.

Oregon Trail (pc game)

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

As a covered wagon party of pioneers, you head out west from Independence, MI to the Willamette River and valley in Oregon. You first must stock up on provisions, and then, while traveling, make decisions such as when to rest, how much food to eat, etc. The Oregon Trail incorporates strategy and planning ahead along with discovery and adventure as well as action (hunting and floating down the Dalles river).

*This is the Windows version, tested & works on XP Pro SP3, not sure about Vista.

Pidgin vs Trillian, Miranda or Digsby: “Which IM app is the best?

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

bestimappLets be honest here: who does not instant message (IM) nowadays? The problem is the whole world can’t agree on which IM service to use. AIM? MSN? Yahoo? Gmail? [Insert IM service here]? To address this we-can’t-make-up-our-minds issue, programs where created where you could use multiple IM services in one program instead of having to download the client for each service individually. If you ask in public “What IM application should I use?” a turf war will be started between the Pidgin, Trillian, Miranda and Digsby fans. All this fighting prevents the important question from being answered: “Which one is the best?”. Well I am here to try to help you solve that problem.

Each of the four mentioned above have their advantages and disadvantages:

Pidgin

Pros

  • Universally supported – works on more then just Windows.
  • You don’t need to create a server side account to use.
  • Has intensive plugin support.
  • Supports many IM services out of the box.
  • Fairly lightweight.

Cons

  • When it comes to Windows, it lacks basic functionality without plugins.
  • File transfers do not work a lot of the time.
  • Does not have an eye candy interface.

Trillian

Pros

  • Works out of the box.
  • A good balance between computer resource use and aesthetically pleasing interface.
  • You do not need a server side account to use.
  • Good plugin support.

Cons

  • Free version has limited support when it comes to IM services.
  • File transfers usually never work if other person does have not Trillian.
  • Only for Windows (have a Mac version in the works).

Miranda

Pros

  • Very lightweight.
  • Extensive plugin and skinning support.
  • Fully customizable.
  • Supports many IM services out of the box.
  • You don’t need to create a server side account to use.

Cons

  • Takes a lot of customization/setting up to get it to be how you want it.

Digsby

Pros

  • Beautiful interface.
  • Supports many IM services out of the box.
  • Has intensive support for emails and social networks.
  • Fully featured out of the box – no need for plugins.
  • File transfers usually work even if the other person does not have Digsby.
  • Developers are constantly releasing patches and updates.

Cons

  • Has its fair share of problems every now and then with email notifications.
  • Uses slightly more computer resources then the alternatives.
  • Only on Windows (a Mac and Linux version are in the works).
  • Little to no plugin support.

I have used all four mentioned about so again, each of the four have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are looking for an IM application that is very light on computer resources & stable, go with Miranda or Pidgin.

If you want my personal opinion, I say while all of the IM apps are good, PIDGIN IS THE BEST IM application that surpasses all the rest. It’s very easy to setup and works out of the box – no need to install plugins or anything. Also, besides allowing you to connect to AIM, Windows Live Messenger (MSN), Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, Facebook Chat, ICQ, and Jabber IM services, you also have the ability to monitor multiple emails from different email services (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL/AIM Mail) or even a custom email service (via IMAP or POP) and social networking (Facebook, MySpace) accounts. It has a very aesthetically pleasing interface and file transfers usually work no matter what IM application the other person you are talking to is using.
However if you ever travel alot and away from your own computer alot. Make sure you check out www.meebo.com for an Im solution that doesnt require you to download anything. All services are hosted right on the web. Plus they have easy to set up chat rooms that u could link to your organization’s website. :) .

Here are download links for all four:

Pidgin

Trillian

Miranda

Digsby

Which application (if any) do you use? Post below so we can segregate readers by their choice (or lack of choice) of IM applications and start our own sectarian violence.

Goodbye to torrent files! “DHT is the future, says Pirate Bay.

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

“DHT is the future, says Pirate Bay.

It seems to be the end of an era for the PirateBay. After having its recognizable logo pirated from itself, the PirateBay winds down a little bit further by officially shutting down its Bittorrent tracker.

As detailed in the PirateBay blog today, the sharing site is now going with Distributed Hash Table (DHT) services. The PirateBay explains to us what it believes to be the sharing future:

The development of DHT has reached a stage where a tracker is no longer needed to use a torrent. DHT (combined with PEX) is highly effective in finding peers without the need for a centralized service. If you run uTorrent you might have noticed in the tracker tab of your torrents that the [Peer Exchange] (PEX) row is often reporting a lot more peers than the trackers you might have for that torrent. These peers all came to you without the use of a central tracker service! This is what we consider to be the future. Faster and more stability for the users because there is no central point to rely upon.

Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well.

By moving to a more decentralized system of handling tracking (DHT+PEX) and distributions of torrent files (Magnet Links), BitTorrent will become less vulnerable to downtime and outages:

* With decentralized peer acquisition, there is no central tracker that can be down.
* With decentralized fetching of metadata (torrents) we don’t need to rely on a single server that stores and distributes torrent files.”

saw this on another site so i figured id post it

Clear wire usb modem

Posted by Johnny Romano On November - 4 - 2010

So I recently got clearwire as a secondary ISP to test out for mobile internet use.

CLEAR 4G WiMAX is next generation mobile internet from Clearwire that works as fast around town as it does at home*. Because CLEAR covers a wide area you don’t have to find a hotspot—the hotspot goes with you, anywhere CLEAR has coverage.

CLEAR mobile internet is 4 times faster than 3G*. So do the same things on the go, at speeds as fast as at home:

  1. Watch live sports on a train
  2. Email a huge presentation from the park
  3. Let your kids play online games while you get your hair cut

Basically what this means is that I can access the internet with the same mobile broadband technology that your mobile phone is based off of. The benefit of this is that I can create a network of computers where ever there is electricity (with the home modem). Then the USB modem will provide an internet connection for your laptop or desktop computer.

Conclusion:

These devices are absolutely great if you live away from high rise buildings and in-line of site of antenna towers. If you are using this in the suburbs, you will most likely love it! However using this in the inner city of Chicago like me, its close to impossible. In large metro city’s like Chicago, you are more likely to find good connection speeds from wifi hotspots.

The one technical benefit from Clear is that they give you a static IP address with your service. This is great for internet broadcasting, connecting to server’s or even using for remote screen sharing. Which is something I use to provide technical support for my clients @ Bizoost.
